Certain Discipline Works for All Students

Advice for handling tough discipline situations applies to parents with children of all types and abilities. Try these tips to help with your tough discipline problems:

• Emphasize household routines, such as doing homework at the same time each day. When students always know what to expect, it is easier for them to comply.
• Pick the most important rules and enforce them quickly and consistently. Remember that too many rules will confuse your child.
• Help your child get organized by using lists, calendars, folders and other supplies that keep him/her on track.
• Look your child in the eye when you give instructions.
• Start with simple directions that have just one pare, such as, "Pick up your book." Gradually work up to longer requests: "Go to your room, find your backpack, and bring me your notebook."
• Make a step-by-step plan for how jobs will be accomplished, including assignments. Break big tasks into small parts. Consider writing and signing a homework contract. Contact your school counselor for assistance.

Both parents must set the same limits: Whether or not parents live together, it is important for them to agree on basic rules. For example, "Bedtime is a nine o'clock." If rules are different, it is tough for kids to obey them. Consistent rules also prevent students from pitting one parent against the other. Work together for the sake of your kids. Provide them with a consistent set of limits at home.
